The Great Ocean Road

Over the weekend, we took a last minute trip down the Great Ocean Road - a stretch of road that starts about 50 miles outside of Melbourne and traces the southern coastline for 150 miles. It was built by Australian veterans returning from WWI, and while parts of it pale in comparison to the Bug Sur, pieces of it are absolutely outstanding!

Our first (out of the car) stop was at Bells Beach. We arrived at sunset, just in time for Mike to see the waves Patrick Swayze surfed in the movie Point Break.

We arrived in Port Melbourne just after midnight, too late to see anything but perfectly positioned to explore big landmarks like the 12 Apostles on Saturday.

By lunch time, the heat was getting to MKB and the flies were getting to me. So we jumped back in the car and headed east towards Apollo Bay - a cute little town that reminded us of what Laguna Beach much have looked like 30 years ago.

I know this is random, but I had to document Australian lifeguard attire - bulky, long-sleeve tops and hats. It's smart, but a far cry from Baywatch!

And just before heading home, we stopped at Aireys Inlet.
